Aerobatic jet trainers

Built to teach military pilots, which makes them the most forgiving aircraft to fly as a passenger. Rolls, loops and sustained turns, usually with time at the controls.

Which jet should you choose?

If it is your first jet flight

The L-39 Albatros. It is the most widely operated civilian fighter jet in the world, forgiving to fly because it was built to teach, and available at more locations than anything else on the list.

If you want speed

The Hawker Hunter is the fastest bookable aircraft and the only one offering low-level valley routes. The T-33 is the quickest in North America.

If you want the aircraft itself

The MiG-15 and the Vampire are first-generation jets with genuine combat history, flown by very few operators anywhere.

If you are flying with someone

Ask about two-ship formation sorties, where a second aircraft flies alongside for photography.

Common questions

Which fighter jets can civilians actually fly?

Seven fighter jets carry civilian passengers today: the L-39 Albatros, Hawker Hunter, MiG-15 Fagot, de Havilland Vampire, Aermacchi S.211, Aermacchi MB-326 and Lockheed T-33.

Can you fly a supersonic jet as a passenger?

No. You cannot currently fly a supersonic jet as a passenger. Supersonic passenger flights only ran in the MiG-29, which is not currently bookable, and every fighter jet available to civilians today is subsonic.

Which fighter jet is easiest to fly as a passenger?

The L-39 Albatros is the easiest fighter jet to fly as a passenger. It was designed as a military trainer, so it is predictable, holds aerobatic figures cleanly and has dual controls as standard.

Do I get to fly the fighter jet myself?

Yes, in most jets you can fly the aircraft yourself in level flight and gentle turns once your pilot is satisfied you are comfortable. Take-off, landing and low-level flying stay with the pilot.

How do I choose between locations for the same aircraft?

To choose between locations for the same aircraft, compare terrain, season and sortie profile. The L-39 Albatros, for example, flies from six airfields, and each location page covers what that sortie involves.
