How American air power is structured
Four operating services
Fighters are flown by the US Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Air National Guard, each with its own aircraft mix, from carrier-based Super Hornets to Marine F-35Bs operating from amphibious ships.
Doctrine drives design
American air power is built around air superiority first: stealth, sensors and long-range missiles let a small number of aircraft control contested airspace before strike and support aircraft follow.
What comes next
The F-47, chosen in 2025 under the Next Generation Air Dominance programme, is planned to replace the F-22 and to fly alongside uncrewed collaborative combat aircraft.

Can you fly an American fighter jet?
Not in a frontline type: the F-22, F-35 and F-15 are flown only by military pilots. You can fly the L-39 Albatros, a former military jet trainer, from Florida and California, or the American-built T-33 Shooting Star from Waterloo, Ontario.
United States fighter jet questions
How many fighter jets does the US have?
The United States has roughly 2,800 combat aircraft across the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Air National Guard, the largest fighter fleet in the world.
What is the best American fighter jet?
The best American fighter jet for air superiority is the F-22 Raptor, the most capable air superiority fighter in US service. The F-35 Lightning II is the most widely used fifth-generation multirole aircraft.
What is the fastest American fighter jet?
The fastest American fighter jet in service is the F-15 Eagle, at around Mach 2.5. The retired SR-71 Blackbird, a reconnaissance aircraft, reached over Mach 3.
Why did the US stop building the F-22 Raptor?
The US stopped building the F-22 Raptor in 2011, after 187 production aircraft, largely because of cost and a shift in post-Cold War priorities towards the cheaper, multirole F-35.
What will replace the F-22 Raptor?
The F-47 will replace the F-22 Raptor. It was selected in 2025 under the Next Generation Air Dominance programme and is planned as the F-22 successor.
