How Japanese air power is structured
One operating service
All fighters are flown by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, including the F-35Bs planned to operate from converted Izumo-class ships.
Licence production
Japan builds fighters under licence and assembles F-35s domestically, but has not fielded a wholly indigenous fighter since the F-1.
What comes next
Japan is a full partner with the UK and Italy in the Global Combat Air Programme, which will replace the F-2 from the mid-2030s.

Can you fly a Japanese fighter jet?
Japanese military aircraft are not available for civilian flights. The nearest experience is a former military jet trainer such as the L-39 Albatros, available from California and across Europe.
